The Simulation
-
European Parliament
The European Parliament is the biggest democratically elected assembly in the world and is also the biggest committee in a Model European Union. As a member of the European Parliament (MEP), a participant has to represent the interests of their assigned parliamentary group. MEPs discuss, amend, and vote upon legislative proposals introduced by the Commission with the Council of the EU being a co-legislator. -
Council of the European Union
In the Council of the European Union representatives of the 28 national governments meet to discuss and decide upon policy and legislative issues. In the simulation’s ordinary legislative procedure, the Council discusses, amends, and votes upon legislative proposals introduced by the Commission with the EP being a co-legislator. When discussing a legislative proposal, the Council therefore has to take the position of the EP into consideration and vice versa. Ministers should stay in contact with MEPs in order to reach a compromise on legislation. -
European Council
As Heads of States or Governments in the European Council, participants will define general policies and set the priorities of the EU. In doing so, they will address the most challenging and pressing issues Europe is facing. While the Council does not have legislative authority, its opinions and conclusions provide a highly valuable insight to the general functioning of the EU. -
Journalist
Part of the political life is the press’s statements and reports. With this in mind, Brussels Model European Union gives an opportunity to aspiring journalists or reporters to apply and improve their writing skills while learning about European institutions. The simulation has a daily newspaper which has a hard copy and a digital copy.
